I wanted to know how to setup a run time license. Is this a different application than the regular test studio? If so where can I find the download. If not, how do I configure Test Studio for run time. I have two machines, one I would like to use for recording and one I want to use strictly for playback. How can I accomplish this?

Hi Nick,

First yes our Run-Time edition is a separate product with a separate download/installer. I took a look into your account, while you are the license owner, you have designated that Mike Bender as the "Licensed User" for that purchase. As a result Mike is the only person who can login to Telerik.com and download it as shown in the attached screen shot (I admit it's a little odd our system prevents the license owner from downloading the installer when you designate another person as the licensed user). So you can either ask Mike to download it or remove Mike as the licensed user so you can download it yourself.

To answer your last question, the Run-Time edition is simply our full Test Studio with the standalone IDE removed. Here's a comparison and some of the things you can do with it:
http://www.telerik.com/automated-testing-tools/support/documentation/user-guide/overview/test-studio-vs-run-time.aspx

Is this enough to get you started? What additional information do you need?

It's just a thought, but I ask as a user who loses far too much time to this sort of thing: couldn't you please loosen up your DRM just a little to avoid causing such massive inconvenience to your paying customers?

Hello Darren,

We appreciate and value your feedback. I would like a little clarification from you however. In what way would you like us to "loosen up your DRM"? We think it's pretty flexible now as it is. What scenario do you feel blocked from, or is causing you undue stress or headaches?

Hi Telerik,

I am trying to set up an execution server. I am referring to document at http://docs.telerik.com/teststudio/features/scheduling-test-runs/create-execution-server. This document is not very detailed and helpful. I have few questions, and like to get help from Telerik.

I cannot find the Telerik Test Studio Run Time Edition on your website, where do I find Run time edition and how much does it cost?

Hello Viral,

Here is the link where you can get the Run Time Edition from.

Once you buy and install it simply follow this article on how to connect it to the Scheduling Server.

Cody,

I have Test Studio standalone installed on my local machine but want to load test a web application installed on a different test server.  Do I need to install the run time version on the test server in order to be able to load test and gather metrics from that server?  If so, do I need to purchase a separate runt time license just for the test server?

Thanks,

Robert

Hi Robert,

Allow me to break up your question into 2 parts:
  1. Do I need to install the run time version on the test server in order to be able to load test that server?

No. The load test will run on a local machine generating large volumes of traffic and sending it to the remote server. Nothing needs to be installed on the remote server to run the load test and get basic measurements such as average response time, request/second and so on. We have a lot of metrics that can be measured by the sending machine.

  2. Do I need to install the run time version on the test server in order to be able to gather metrics from that server?

If the metrics you are after are part of the Windows Performance Counters, then yes. This includes things like memory use, CPU use, SQL server use and so on.

If so, do I need to purchase a separate runt time license just for the test server?

For question 2 above, yes that is correct.

However you do have one other option to consider. You do have 2 licenses of Test Studio Ultimate. The ultimate edition includes the features, just like the runtime edition, for allowing the load test machine to pull the Windows Performance counters from it. Thus you could run Ultimate from one machine to run the load test and install your 2nd license of Ultimate on the server just for the purpose of gathering performance counters. In the long run this is the more expensive route to take as you're consuming one full license on a server only for the purpose of gathering performance counters. But in the short term it allows you to get the counters w/o any additional purchases.
