We conduct server maintenance on Wednesday nights (applying Windows updates etc.) and I run a series of tests (some as Test Lists and some not) to verify everything is back up.

For several week now, I have encountered a strange thing happening with my Test Studio.  I try to kick off my test lists and they merely open one blank browser page after another.  When this situation occurs, I cannot run a single test alone (just get a blank page) and I cannot create a new test (click actions won't record).  Closing and reopening Test Studio does nothing to remedy the situation.

I have found that the only way to fix it is completely close everything down and reboot my machine.  Once back up the tests run normally.  Rebooting is very inconvenient especially if I'm remote.

Anyone have an idea of what is causing this and a fix?  I cannot seem to make it do it, it just this on occasion (about 6 or 7 times in as many weeks).

Hello Dennis,
this sounds like a very peculiar issue. You can try capturing an application log of the issue and sending that to us:
http://www.telerik.com/automated-testing-tools/support/documentation/user-guide/knowledge-base/best-practices/generate-application-log.aspx

When you run the TestLists and you can only see the browser windows firing up and then closing - do you see any results in Results view? What error do they contain? Or are the results just missing?

Unfortunately I cannot offer any other real advice on how to deal with the situation - the sporadic nature of the problem will make it difficult to reproduce and troubleshoot.

Hi Stoich,
I will try to capture more info for you the next time it occurs (it has started to happen more frequently now).  One point of clarification though.  The test list kicks off a browser instance for each url, but never closes any.  Because my main test list is composed of tests of about 40 urls plus 2 data-driven tests that each hit about 30 web service urls, you can see I build up quite a batch of open (empty) browser windows!  In each case, the target url does not appear in the address bar.  Instead "about:blank" appears, which is my default (new blank page) when opening new tabs.  As I said, closing and reopening the application doesn't fix this.  Just rebooting my computer.  Do I have some registry entry out of whack?

Hello Dennis,

You can certainly rerun the Test Studio installer and choose the "Repair" option if you suspect there are any missing or corrupt files, shortcuts, or registry entries.

As Stoich mentioned, generating an application log is probably the best starting point.

Kind regards,
