I think there is a little bug in column header with gridview when sorting a grouped column and ShowGroupedColumns = true.
Changing sorting direction only works first time, then you need to click on grouped tag to change sorting direction. See attached gif
I have attached the example project used in the gif to test this.

You are right. Sorting through the column header, when the ShowGroupedColumns property is true, is only possible in descending sort. I have logged this in our Feedback Portal on your behalf so that you will be notified of its status change and tracked its progress.

Maybe it is because when you change from descending sort, next one is "no sort" and with grouped columns there is no no such thing.
It can go from ascending sort to descending one but not from descending to "no sort".
